We want to inform you about a new law in Michigan that affects how sick leave works starting in 2025. This law, called the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA), requires that employers provide paid sick time to all employees. We have put together a few questions and answers to help explain what this means to you:
What is the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA)?
- ESTA is a new law in Michigan that started on February 21, 2025.
- It applies to all full-time and part-time employees.
- All employers in Michigan will be affected and not just our organization
What changes because of ESTA?
- Unused sick time will now carry over from year to year up to 72 hours (previously it was 40 hours).
- You can take sick time in 1-hour increments instead of the previous 4- or 8-hour blocks.
Will I get more time off because of ESTA?
- No, your sick time will just be combined with your current PTO time. You won’t lose or gain PTO time. It will remain the same, but it will be allocated differently to comply with the new law.
Will anything change in ADP when requesting time off?
- Yes, when you request time off, you’ll need to choose either "Vacation" or "Sick Time" from the drop-down menu under the PTO plan.
Will part-time employees get more time off?
- Yes, part-time employees will now earn 72 hours of PTO each year, just like full-time employees.
We hope this information has helped clarify the changes brought about by the new Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA). We are committed to making the transition as smooth as possible. Thank you for your attention to this important update, and we appreciate your continued dedication to our organization.
